Sydney's Housing Crisis: The Impact on Vulnerable Youth

Sydney, known for its cultural vibrancy and economic vitality, is facing a severe housing crisis that is affecting young people at an alarming rate. The combination of skyrocketing rent, low vacancy rates, and escalating living expenses is pushing many young Australians towards homelessness or precarious living arrangements. For vulnerable youth, this crisis is compounded by challenges like family violence, mental health issues, and limited financial support, making secure housing a distant prospect.

The Hidden Crisis of Vulnerable Young People

At Taldumande Youth Services (TYS), we work with some of the most vulnerable young people in Sydney, and their experiences reflect the devastating impact of Sydney’s housing and affordability crisis. The young people we support are not just grappling with financial instability—they’re navigating a complex array of challenges that compound their vulnerability and make finding secure housing even more critical. Here’s a closer look at some of the issues that TYS clients face every day:

Family Breakdown: A striking 90% of young people in our housing programs have been referred due to family breakdowns often rooted in violence, abuse, or the absence of supportive family and community networks.

Urgent Demand for Crisis Beds: In the last year alone, 174 children and young people were turned away from our Crisis Refuge because of limited bed availability, highlighting the overwhelming need for safe, accessible housing.

Mental Health: Every young person we work with struggles with mental health issues, which are made worse by the relentless stress of housing insecurity.

Migrants Facing Additional Barriers: Around 40% of clients in our family program are first-generation migrants. Many of these families confront language barriers and severe financial constraints, making it even harder to access housing and social services.

These factors create a harsh reality for vulnerable children, young people and their families, limiting their access to education, employment, and a sustainable future.

Voices from Taldumande

Young people like Sam (name changed for privacy), who resides with TYS, speak to the obstacles they face: "Sydney’s rental crisis has made it nearly impossible to think about stable, long-term housing,” Sam shares. “With youth allowance barely covering the basics, finding affordable rent feels like it would take a miracle.”

Others, like Mia, express how the high cost of living impacts their life choices and future plans: “I’d love to travel or save, but it’s just not an option,” Mia says. “Most of what I have goes to rent and basic living costs, like groceries. It’s hard to see a way forward sometimes.”

These experiences reflect the broader struggles of young Australians dealing with housing insecurity, strained family relations, and mental health issues—all of which leave little room to plan for their future.

The Role of Taldumande Youth Services

Lisa Graham, CEO of Taldumande Youth Services, highlights the need for more than just temporary shelter. “At Taldumande, we believe every young person deserves a stable foundation from which to build their future, ” she says. “Our goal is to provide not just emergency housing, but long-term support to help break the cycle of homelessness and create pathways to a better tomorrow.”

Through comprehensive support services, TYS provides young people with resilience-building, trauma-informed care, and connections to education and employment—key components in helping them envision and pursue a future beyond their current struggles.
