Taldumande Youth Services has received a generous $25,000 donation from Freemasons District 22 and Masonicare, following the Grand Master's Sleep Out held at the Artarmon Masonic Centre this year.
The overnight event brought together Freemasons from across northern Sydney, who gave up the comfort of their beds to spend a cold winter night sleeping on hard floors and outdoors. The purpose of the event was to raise awareness of youth homelessness and to support the work of Taldumande with children and young people who are experiencing homelessness, family breakdown and other significant challenges.
The amazing team described the night as cold, uncomfortable and reflective, with sleep coming only in short stretches. Several participants noted that while their experience lasted only one night, many young people face uncertainty, isolation and unsafe sleeping arrangements night after night, where they may be more vulnerable to abuse, theft, intimidation and other risks on the street.
One member reflected that even with a warm sleeping bag, they woke during the night because of the cold. Another noted that while the group had the support and company of each other, young people sleeping rough may be facing those circumstances alone.
The Grand Master's Sleep Out formed part of a wider Freemasons NSW & ACT initiative through Masonicare. District 22 chose to support Taldumande Youth Services, recognising the importance of practical, local support for young people and children who need safety, stability and connection.
Taldumande sincerely thanks Freemasons District 22, Masonicare and all those who took part in the Sleep Out.
This contribution will support our ongoing work with vulnerable children, young people and families across Sydney, helping to keep young people safe and off the streets through access to safe accommodation, casework support and pathways towards stability and independence
The partnership also reflects a shared commitment to community, compassion and practical action.
Taldumande looks forward to continuing this relationship with Freemasons District 22 and Masonicare, and to working together to create positive outcomes for young people who need support the most.
District 22 Reflections
"I had a very warm sleeping bag, but I still woke at 4:30am from the cold. Homeless people do not have that luxury, and having to do it every night must be devastating."
"We were lucky to have the Brethren to support each other. Sleeping alone on the street must be very scary."
