National Children’s Week, held from 19th to 27th October 2024, serves as a reminder to reflect on the rights and well-being of children and young people. It is a time to acknowledge the critical need for safe, supportive environments where they can thrive. At Taldumande Youth Services (TYS), we are committed to ensuring that young people in crisis have access to the necessary resources and support to overcome homelessness and build a brighter future.
The Reality of Youth Homelessness
According to the latest Census data, approximately 28,200 young Australians aged 12-24 were experiencing homelessness, representing nearly 23% of the total homeless population (AIHW). This number includes young people who are homeless and presenting alone, with services such as Taldumande supporting around 38,300 youth clients in similar situations.
However, it’s important to note that these figures may under-represent the true scale of youth homelessness. Many young people who are couch surfing may report their usual address, rather than where they stayed on the night of the Census, leading to potential underreporting of the issue (AIHW).
This hidden crisis highlights the urgent need for targeted services tailored to the unique challenges faced by homeless youth. As Lisa Graham, CEO of Taldumande Youth Services, states:
"Every young person deserves the chance to thrive. Our mission at Taldumande is to ensure that vulnerable young people not only have a safe place to sleep but also access the support they need to build a future filled with opportunity."
