homeless girlTaldumande Youth Services (TYS) is a community based organisation supported by the NSW Department of Community Services which specialises in the care and support of young people who are homeless on Sydney's North Shore, or young people who are at risk of homelessness for a variety of reasons.

TYS has been operating for 26 years, during which time we have cared for over 6000 young people who have passed through our doors. Many we have assisted in reuniting with their families, completing their education, obtaining employment and stable accommodation under our care and protection, and a great many have benefited from having a safe and caring place to live with supportive adults while their young lives were in turmoil.

TYS operates an 5-bed emergency and short-term accommodation centre in Neutral Bay, as well as a mixed gender 4-bed medium-term shared housing and semi-supported service in Crows Nest, and four single-bed units for longer term stay. The services target young people aged 14 - 22 years who have significant connections to the North Shore area.

Our staff consists of experienced and qualified Managers and Case Workers providing 24-hour services to ensure the safety and well-being of the young people in our care.

Many of the young people come to us with little more than the clothes they stand up in, confused and without a trusting adult to turn to. A great many have given up hope and see the world as a dangerous and unrewarding place to be. TYS endeavours to meet their basic needs (clothing, food, accommodation), practical needs (teaching of living skills, transport, assisting with income, education, recreation, information and employment) and emotional needs (support, reconciling with family or significant others, self-esteem, and personal development).

Operating TYS and continuing to provide services and support to young people in our local community costs a great deal. For every young person accommodated, six are turned away, reflecting the need for our service in the community.
